What a start to the Pre-Season Tournament.

The local Eastside derby was a cracker, with hits galore, and braggin rights up for grabs. Keas have a strong pack, and the Eagles backs have got plenty of zip... a closely fought win to the Keas.

On field 2, the Tigers showed plenty of ticker and looked to have the edge on the Knights, but the last 10 minutes saw the Knights big boys overpower the smaller Pap boys for a suprising good win (considering the closeness of the game throughout)

The Hornets, in their Jubilee year, were the pick of the bunch, ambushing last years Prems, the Panthers, and coming away with a convincing win... definitely the team to watch this year.

Celebration Lions showed some solid defence and good combinations, despite no preseason trial matches against other teams, to beat the Northern Bulldogs 56-16...

All the best to all teams for next week...

"HE LIVES IN ME...!"

Any Newpaper Reports of Round One?

Has anyone seen a writeup of the first round of the High Speed Doors Pre-Season Tournament?

I have looked online and through the local rags but havent seen a word so far.

Pretty disappointing when other sports like boxing, yachting, football, bowls, cycling, cricket and rugby, but no mention of rugby league - apart from the NRL... GUTTED!!!

Come on CRL... pull finger and start covering your sport. Theres no excuses because we are all playing outside your Head Office at your own grounds.

The players on the field are the BEST domestic rugby league players in New Zealand, but they dont deserve a mention in the local papers, or your own website...

SORT IT OUT...

Well said Embassy, the coverage on League is complete and utter crap! You would think that CRL would make a point of getting coverage each week.

Is the CRL pushing The Press to get someone along?? I know the Press arent very league friendly anyway...

Even someone from the CRL could always write up a story and post it on their website???

just a thought....

Hi Speed Doors Cup Semi Finals

Celebration Lions 50
Riccarton Knights 22
Lions got off to a flyer and were in threat of losing - Knights indiscipline cost them

Linwood Keas 22
Halswell Hornets 14
Keas started strongly but the Hornets hit back and stayed in the game - Keas experience showed throughout

Racecourse Hotel Plate Semi-Finals

Aranui Eagles 34
Hornby Panthers 26
Aranui were looked comfortable against last years Prems in the first half, but the Panther roared back and the difference in the end was only a try and goal kicking.

Papanui Tigers 24
Northern Bulldogs 18
Another close game - evenly matched - Tigers

Some really entertaining games last night. The Lions were all over the Knights but were at one stage threatened when Knights got some momentum. I think they took the penalty goal, why? Will be interesting to see if they can penetrate the Keas the same way they have been over last couple weeks. The keas prevailed over the hornets which was a great highlight. It looks like there are quite a number of new faces in the squad but they still look the goods. With Teni, Damian H and Antonio to come back these guys will be good this year. Tim R also looked like he slotted easily into the team which strengthens them even more. Hornets will be top 4 this year if they can limit their injuries. Tough young side with some experienced old heads in Beyers and Martin, definitely will have some success this year.

My picks for next week - Keas 12-
Aranui 13+

beautiful game this rugby league.

Celebration smacking the knights a new one 50 22,was a huge surprise to me thought it would be more contested then it was,

Tigers bulldogs was a good game wit bulldogs puttin out a better side from last week maintaining a good comp this year for the northerners

Halswall/Linwood, how good was timmy out there?Linwood looked more polished this week then last week, and against whom i believe will be the darkhorse of this years comp the hornets.havent really gotten a good look at pap, cele, northern but halswall look very tight indeed.

My MIGHTY Aranui eagles over the Panthers last night was a mighty send off for Pete Asi,who coincidently played fuggin mean also, good effort across the board had the game been 10 mins longer could of been a different result but good game to watch

GO THE EAGLES

Hey Dr Ropata...

Here is a step by step guide for the CRL

1. Someone at CRL picks up the phone
2. Someone at CRL calls one of their 2010 sponsors - the Christchurch Mail
Maybe someone like:
Tony Petre - Editor on 03-366 1622 or email: themail@press.co.nz

"Can you send someone along to cover the High Speed Doors Pre-season Tournament at Rugby League Park, every Friday night, starting at 6pm, March 12-26 2010"

Answer: YES
Reply: "Chur..."
Answer: NO
Reply: "We will write some match reports and send them in".

ALL DONE

Good luck to all the teams in the 201) Pre-Season Finals next week...

PICKS:

Lions vs Keas
Lions to win -12

Eagles vs Papanui
Eagles to win -12

"Go the mighty Lions...!"

"HE LIVES IN ME...!"

how everybodys thoughts change so quick with the introduction of the eagles winning a game.?

could have well been any other team everyone on here has written off.

preseason means nothing but a training run to finalise squads.

But some teams do look strong, hopefully not too strong this early on.

I don't think the Lions have ever smacked the Keas. It's always been the other way around I think. I'm sure Moe will pick the best possible team available. Antz and Teni will be massive boost.

I think its gonna be an interesting final with both sides playing similar styles.
I see the Keas with a lot more grit but the Lions with a lot more physicality.
Im picking Kea pride to get them home by 4, but only if they can contain the Lions aggression up the middle.

The Lions seem to have been tinkering with their line up too...dont think i have seen Kasi or Manu Weepu out there for them yet? If they both play could be difficult to contain on the back of good momentum from Lions forwards.

Manu has played both games. Cele only missing kasi really. Celebration is the only team that is fielding full strength line up (aprt from Kasi) If Linwood at full strength they will beat Celebration comfortably!!

Last week celebration without J Kaukura, Kasi Leka, Junior Salevao, paul Sauni, alangi kakoi, jon dixon, tanalia, and another 4 with injuries, we should have a few back this week

We have been trialing 6 new possible prems each week and letting our injured boys recover.

So i think we have a chance

Is Peter Asi playing this week or was that his last hit out ?

If Peter not playing it will be a close call

By the way young crack, the best team wins on the night, no excuses, just congradulations to the winners.

League is a great game

Watched Lions play cant rugby the other night must admit pretty lack luster compared to the league

IMo

Cele have got the measure of Linwood if it was a crash and bash game so its gonna be a smarts game, the smarter team will win.

The halves on both sides will have to step up to guide both these massive packs around the field,Cele with the more star studded backline against Linwoods no nonsense meat and potatoes backline will make for an interesting game.

Cele 13+

Do the Lions get extra money to beat the keas? Funny. I have to disagree with you there Lima. Linwood will be too good. Too tough, Too smart, Too experienced. Lets see how the Lions handle pressure and a bit of physicality . Linwood have been doing it for years and will hopefully tear them another a$$h*le like every other year

I'm pretty happy that the games are actually won and lost on the footy field Like many have already said on here, I reckon the Hornets will be the darkhorses this year. Some really good young guys there. I think our forwards do pretty well in the crash and bash so I guess we'll see about that one bro, the boys always look forward to playing the Lions . Should be a good game on Friday.

I'm picking a Keas and Eagles win.

Just to answer yr question bout taking the penalty shot at goal (Knights game) green lantern. We had just worked our way back into the game after a terrible start and ref said was last play so we thought a try wasnt gaurented so took points on offer so it made the half time score 14-22 to cele, we hoped we could score first after half time but as it turned out we started our second half the same way as the first absolutly disgraceful. Dont think well be that bad again, must admit though(not an excuse) we were quite depleted out of the 19 players only 10 would hav been prem certaintys but hey cant take anything away from cele they played the best they could hav played and boy they let us know. just hope they havnt pecked to early like last year, they put 60 on us in pre season final next game we put 50 on them and we all know who made top 4 and who didnt

hornets are the underdogs this year. should have beat the keas but in the end the experience showed. will be good to see how they go with a few more games as a team. me being a knights man was impressed by them. pitty they lost sam kelsoi in the early stages of the game.

dont think they will beat the mighty knights though

Hey Doc,

sounds like your not to confident, rolling out the excuses already.....

I think the Keas will be to smart and to disciplined for those Lions.....

Who are the depleted lineup? Have they been scared off.
I am suprise by this, aren't the Lions ment to be part of the cat (p**sy) family not the kea's?

CMON WTF not looking for excuses just with 5 or 6 guys missing from last year and they were ya main players its not goin to be easy mind you have picked up 2 new boys to replace some of them in Antonio and Tim. New team new combos mite take awhile to adjust but still confident if they can up there completion rate, AAKEAS played last week and the side went a lot better with him at the helm. Teni didnt play last week hope he plays tonite

Keas now by 20

Doc doesn't sound like he has much faith without Bambi, Kane, Dingo, Johnny, Ieni and Teariki [Scratchin] I guess all will be revealed tonight . Good players will always come and go but we are a club full of depth don't you worry about that Doctor.

Is our team all in order cause you know what those lions will do

Well done the Eagles and Lions
Tigers looked like they had it in the bag.. the score is tied and won by Eagles in a few minutes of golden point. 1 point win to the Eagles.

Well the hype of the other game is over.
16-4 to Lions before sin bin.
16-16 at half time. Disciple and defense on the line.
2nd half too many too errors by the Keas and smart kicking into the in-goal by the lions probably won the game. 44-24.

On to the rest of the draw where there are 2 games at Rugby League park each week. That mean only 2 home games each?

Very tough game tonight Kea's formidable as usual.

We lost 3 props this week and to all the guys that stepped up tonight congradulations you deserved your win.

First hit out for a few boys in backs, it will take a while for combinations to settle in, but heaps of heart and talent.

Kea's supporters showed good sportsmanship a few hand shakes after the game.

Three tight teams on the eastside can't be that bad.

Congradulations to Aranui

All the best to B.lima for the season

2010 High Speed Doors Pre-Season Final:

Celebration Lions 44 Linwood Keas 24

A great win for the mighty Lions tonight and its a long time in coming...

For the Keas, Rihari Peeti was a constant menace and his runs with ball in hand were always a threat to Celebration.

The first half was a "to and fro" affair with the teams taking turns to score right up to half time.

Both big packs cancelled each other out and the game was decided in the backs.

In the second half the Lions backs looked slicker, with big Bruce Havea proving a handful for the Keas... Pose Manu had a hand in everything, Manu Weepu was always a handful with the ball, and Simon ran the backline with skill.

"Go the mighty Lions...!"

Congrads to the Lions on their win. Lets hope you make it a habit and its the only silverware you guys win like last years effort . Keas shot themselves in the foot with too many costly mistakes(how many soft tries off flukey kicks were there?). I'm sure they will be better for it. At half time it looked like they had the momentum but two easy tries after the break killed them. IMO these two teams are light years ahead of the rest, hornets will be up there also. Weepu and Peeti were some standouts. The rematach at the Keas nest will be a cracker.

"12 year old with a whistle"
Haha...
thats funny, Green Lantern...
Gotta say... thats what EVERYONE at the Park was thinking last night
At times, when some of the players were standing over him, he looked very timid... but we really have to push these guys through, cos in the long run - the more new refs that get exposure at this level, the better off our beloved game will be.

Big Congrats to the Eagles, who are improving with every match, and will be at full steam for their home game on Friday against the Keas...

WHAT A MATCHUP!

Good luck to all the teams next week, with the split round...

"Go the mighty Lions...!"

HE LIVES IN ME...!

Actually if its the same guy that reffed us against the panthers first round then i was actually impressed with him(young fella maybe 19-20?)

He kept control of the game well but let it flow.

He has improved light years from where he was last year.

As you say Embassy, it is in our best interest to help these young guys through. They are the future of our local game every bit as much as the next batch of premier players.

Congrats to u Murray and the Celebration Lions...
Sounds like it was a good game but Lions pulled away in the end. Good to hear Manu Weepu is playing, had a run with him in Under 18's before he went to Wellington, great player and if it wasnt for hick up with the law think he would be in Auz playin NRL.

Good luck to all teams nxt week.

PEACE
