Just letting you know that enrolments are now being accepted for 2010. Our students truly made their mark in 2009 assisting CRFL in the facilitation of the Junior Schools Rugby League Tournaments and competitions, placing a very respectable third placing at Nationals (losing only to St Pauls) and by reclaiming the title of number 1 Rugby League school in CHCH by winning the regional competition with a 58-0 win over SBHS.

The academy programme for 2010 now has a 20 hour option with students gaining their ncea numeracy and literacy credits in an adapted "life skill" English and Mathematics module whilst studying all aspects of Rugby League. Included in the academic assessment will be NCEA Achievement and Unit standards available for students to attain throughout the year.

Students can also study Rugby League part time opting into other subjects or academies (for more info see www.aranuiacademies.com or our facebook page)

Here a few topics that will be covered within the Rugby League Academy programme for 2010 - Individual and Team skill development, Weight training and personal fitness planning, Aerobic and Anaerobic conditioning techniques, Coaching and Leadership skill Development, Video Analysis, Aquacise and aqua fitness, Sports Psychology, Nutrition, Alcohol and drug awareness, Tactical awareness and strategy in Rugby League, Cross training.

Benji Marshall's old school, Keebra Park High (Arrive Alive cup 2009 Champions) and Morayfield state school will also be travelling over to play Aranui High next year.

For more information on the programme, please feel free to contact Andrew Auimatagi (Rugby League Academy Director) or come in and collect an enrolment package

Sounds like a fantastic year coming up. Do you anticipate getting students from outside of christchurch/from non traditional schools?

We have already had a few enrolments recieved from outside of the school and we are looking at hopefully securing a class of around 25 ideally. This year enrolments were highest in February so I am expecting some arrivals eary next year once again. This year we had 6 students from other schools/Norh Island join the academy.

I also forgot to add in up the top that all academy students will have full access to the QE2 Fitness and recreation centre (Weights, stadium, pools) as a large component of the course will be taught down there. A high number of the Rugby League Academy will also make up the bulk of the Aranui High School Senior Rugby League team for 2010 heading up to the NSSRL Tournament in Wainuiomata and playing against these visiting schools from Australia.

We did go very well Eagles as reflected in the results this year. I guess it doesn't help matters when we were unseeded in the National Tournament because of the schools absence for some time. This led to us playing St Pauls in the semi final instead of the preferred road that Aranui had been accustomed to in the past seeded 2nd. If we had played Kelston I am very confident we would have beaten them and progressed. Our record in the Canterbury Schools Competition was near perfect so I'm pretty happy with the way we went (Losing one game all season to the National Champions 9 out of 10, 3rd in NZ & 1st in Canty).

As for Touch Rugby, the teacher in charge felt she did not have the player depth (last year and also in 2009) to make an attempt at the regional or national competitions so there hasn't been a senior boys touch team for a couple of years. We do have a young group coming through that will no doubt feature in the competitions in a couple of years.

I apologise Eagle, I may have misinterpreted your post. The academy boys didn't really express the interest in putting a team in the Canterbury comp therefore Nationals was out of the question. There were also no "Touch" players so to speak, only social players who love to play the game like League lol. The eligibility rules were also going to be an issue as they differ from the Rugby League rules. I have included a Touch/Flag module in the first term so hopefully we can enter a team in the Canty comp next year and we can push on from there.

I haven't heard anything there Coyote. I do know that they are planning to head up to Nationals next year. That would definitely be very good for Canty Schools League. It was a shame we didn't see them in the senior comp in canty this year. I would imagine the academy structure would work well with students over there.

no problems hthk just thgt with the rl team this yr with some traing they could have represented the school very well.
yeah i know the results of the league side and i suppose now you should get 1 of those preferential draws or bettor draws as you should be seeded now.

But as you well know HTHK it doesn't really matter where you draw as if you want to WIN it you have to beat them all anyway.

good luck for next year and if hornby are starting up an RL academy next i am sure you will not regret it and it can only be a positive move for RL in Canty.

Yeah definitely Eagles. Touch is back on the rise at school but it would be easier with a touch guru around. The semi was only 20mins each way so that does help the bigger teams out a bit up there but def no excuses lol

Great to see such a positive turn out today for the first get together for the Academy. Currently we have around 21 students enrolled with some really impressive talent from around Canterbury Rugby League and Rugby joining up for 2010.

Enrolments are still open if you know of any boys who are keen on finding out more about the programme we offer.

The Aranui High School Rugby League Academy would like to congratulate ex-student and last years captain of the successful Aranui High School Senior Rugby League team, Jonathan Lima (class of 09) who has recently signed with the Manly Sea Eagles for a one year deal. Jon was a highly influential figure in his first year at Aranui High with his superb leadership qualities and great contribution in all areas of the academy . Jon is also still eligible for the NYC Toyota Cup side so we look forward to hearing more of his successes this year. Wishing you all the best for the 2010 season Jonny Lima!

The Aranui High School Senior Rugby League squad is currently looking for financial sponsorship for the 2010 season. This year we will be competing in the Canterbury Secondary School competition starting in term 2 and will also be playing against Morayfield State High School (Queensland in June. The big event for the team this year will be the National Secondary Schools Tournament being held in Wainuiomata in term 3 (August/September). In order for our boys to get up there we will be doing alot of fundraising activities. Last year it cost us in excess of $10,000 to send our squad away for the week.

If you are interested in sponsoring, know of someone who might be interested or helping the team reach our fundraising targets this year we would be very grateful. My contact email at school is au@aranui-high.school.nz

Here is a list of some of the boys who are part of the squad this year - Jordan Wawatai (Lions), Danny Samuelu (Keas), Junior Faaiva (Knights), AJ Kasala (Tigers), Abraham Fonmoa (Lions),Mark Nuu (Keas), Michael Tuuta (Knights), Jarmaine Lolotai (Knights), Alex Mosegi (Keas), Aaron Tamou-Taylor (Knights), Eddie Enosa (Keas), Jonah Tuiletafuga (Lions)

So if you are from these boys clubs please make sure you get behind them when they come to you in need of a donation. Thanks.

Jonathan Lima has been named on the bench for the Manly Sea Eagles Under 20's NYC Toyota Cup side's round one clash with the West Tigers. Wishing you all the best Jon for your debut, go hard uce! He's really enjoying the set up over there and was looking sharp on the footy field the other day at school when he came in for a catch up.

Saw Jon Lima this morning looking relaxed, walking up Queen St with the rest of the Manly crew. Be good to see how he goes today...
Got his girlfriend, cousin and a few others travel up and stay with us so he will have a good support crew yelling him on from the sideline.

Message for all ex-Aranui High Rugby League players:

I'm currently in the process of creating a bit of an archive/ honours roll and would really like some squad lists from over the years. If you have played or were involved with the team or the rugby/league academy whilst at school can you please visit our facebook page.

Also feel free to add any old school pics and info about your time at school in the team or the academy.

I will be posting info about current news and organising an old boys network with games and activities in the future (Flag/Touch/League).

regards,
Andrew Auimatagi (Aranui High School Rugby League Coaching Director))
